Societal AI at UVA

Promoting
prosocial AI

Societal AI is a community that explores the intersection of artificial intelligence with society, studies what we can do to maximize benefits while minimizing harms, and mobilizes people to take action for AI safety.

Education

Increasing literacy in AI safety, ethics, and governance

We run an in-house fellowship, host guest speakers, hold biweekly workshops, and throw larger events, all to spread knowledge about the societal impacts of AI.

Action

Turning knowledge into action

Societal AI organizes people to do real, impactful work, as knowledge without an outlet is wasted. We advocate for AI safety in a variety of ways, including canvassing, petitioning, bird-dogging, and tabling.

Community

A network that cares about responsible AI

We are a community at UVA, and in the broader Virginia community, that cares about AI's impact on society. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background. Disagreement is welcome, too, as long as we channel it productively.

"Humanity is about to be handed almost unimaginable power, and it is deeply unclear whether our social, political, and technological systems possess the maturity to wield it."

— Dario Amodei, The Adolescence of Technology
